IIT Guwahati launches innovative 4-year Biomedical Science Programme

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has announced the launch of a new four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degree programme in Biomedical Science and Engineering, with applications opening on April 25, 2025.

The innovative programme will be conducted by the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology (JBMSHST) and represents a collaborative effort incorporating expertise from IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Guwahati, and NIPER Guwahati.

What distinguishes this programme is its emphasis on practical learning, clinical experience, and specialized subjects bridging medicine and technology. Students will benefit from direct interactions with doctors and scientists, providing them with real-world experience in the field.

“This course is designed for those keen to address real health issues with engineering and medicine,” explained IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal during the launch ceremony.

“It aims to prepare professionals capable of developing new healthcare solutions.”

The launch ceremony was attended by several distinguished academics including AIIMS Guwahati Director Prof. Ashok Puranik and NIPER Guwahati Director Professor USN Murty. Representatives from the Mehta Family Foundation (USA), sponsors of the initiative, participated virtually in the event.

Curriculum and Future Opportunities

The programme’s curriculum includes cutting-edge topics such as bioinstrumentation, sensors, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence applications in medicine. After completing three years of the programme, students will have the option to pursue advanced specializations in fields such as neuroscience and personalized medicine.

Application Process and Eligibility

Applications for the programme will be accepted from April 25 to May 25, 2025. Prospective students can find detailed information on the official IIT Guwahati website.

To be eligible for admission, applicants must have:

  • Completed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025
  • Studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology
  • Achieved a minimum of 75% marks in these subjects

Students who have successfully cleared the IISER Aptitude Test 2025 will also be eligible to apply.
