IIT Bombay and Indus Towers forge strategic alliance to advance sustainable energy technologies

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and telecom infrastructure giant Indus Towers Ltd have announced a collaborative partnership to pioneer innovative sustainable energy solutions.

This alliance launches two major research initiatives focused on next-generation solar power and eco-friendly energy storage technologies.

The partnership, embedded within Indus Towers’ Corporate Social Responsibility program Pragati, aims to leverage cutting-edge science and indigenous innovation to create scalable, impactful clean energy technologies.

One of the flagship projects under this collaboration focuses on developing Perovskite Solar Cell technology.

Unlike conventional silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells, perovskite cells promise higher energy conversion efficiency without increasing production costs.

Entirely developed through indigenous research at IIT Bombay, this technology holds transformative potential for both terrestrial solar power generation and space-based solar applications, marking a breakthrough in the quest for more efficient, affordable solar energy.

The second initiative addresses a critical sustainability challenge in India—agricultural residue management.

The project seeks to convert rice straw, a prevalent agricultural waste product often burned to the detriment of air quality, into doped hard carbon materials.

These materials are intended for use as anodes or additives in sodium-ion batteries, which offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries. This innovation not only mitigates environmental hazards associated with stubble burning but also strengthens India’s clean energy ecosystem by utilizing indigenous, eco-friendly resources.

Prachur Sah, Managing Director and CEO of Indus Towers, said: “This partnership is a powerful example of industry and academia coming together to address real-world challenges through research and innovation.”

The partnership exemplifies how CSR funding can be strategically channeled to foster high-impact research and innovation, transforming scientific ideas into real-world solutions. By harnessing indigenous expertise and resources, IIT Bombay and Indus Towers are contributing to India’s vision of becoming a pioneer in sustainable energy technologies on the global stage.
