The Department of Applied Mechanics
The Department of Applied Mechanics is one of the oldest departments at IIT Delhi, fostering a tradition of teaching and research at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our faculty members and students are engaged in cutting-edge research across various thrust areas, including but not limited to aerodynamics and acoustics, biomechanics and soft robotics, environmental and atmospheric flows, fluid instabilities and turbulence, machine-learning-assisted mechanics, multifunctional materials and structures, and multiscale modeling.
The Department of Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology
The Department of Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology at IIT Delhi has a unique place in the development of biochemical engineering discipline in India. The Institute took an early note of the significant role that was to be played by biochemical engineers and biotechnologists in future industrial development of biotechnology-related processes and products by initiating this activity in 1968. At present, the Department provides a model for an integrated approach towards education as well as research and development of various bioprocesses.
Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, established in September, 1963, is one of the twenty three Departments/Centers of IIT Delhi. The Department offers core courses in chemistry for undergraduate B.Tech. students of Engineering in the Institute. In addition, it offers a two years M.Sc. programme and a Ph.D programme in Chemistry. Doctoral and post-doctoral research is carried out in all major areas of chemical and allied sciences. Major thrust is in the areas of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics, polymers, organometallics, solid state & materials chemistry, nanomaterials, organic synthesis, carbohydrate chemistry, structural biology, molecular recognition, NMR methodology, X-ray crystallography, theoretical chemistry, computer simulations and others.
Department of Civil Engineering
One of the primary engineering departments of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, the Department of Civil Engineering offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degree programs. The Department registers M.S. and Ph.D. candidates including those under the Quality Improvement Programs (QIP). Under its Continuing Education Program (CEP), it organizes from time to time, advanced special courses as well as short time refresher courses with participation both from academic and serving senior level officers in Central and State Government and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
The Department actively promotes curriculum development activity by updating existing courses, developing new courses and preparing resource material for teaching. The Department has a number of ongoing research projects and sponsored research schemes from public and private sector organizations. It undertakes industrial consultancy works as a part of its interaction with industry and also organizes seminars/symposia for professional interaction. Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Since its founding in 1982, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIT Delhi has been a pioneer in research and a beacon of teaching excellence. The department, ranked 63rd globally by the 2024 QS World University Rankings, continues to lead computer science research in India while training a new generation of computer scientists poised to address global challenges.
Department of Electrical Engineering
IIT Delhi’s department of electrical engineering has been playing a vital role in producing scientists and technologists of highest caliber ever since it was established in the year 1961. The department runs three undergraduate programmes and 9 post-graduate programmes to cater to the ever challenging needs of technical excellence in all areas of electrical engineering such as Integrated electronics and circuits, Tele-communications, Computer technology, Control & Automation, Power systems & Power electronics.
Department of Energy Science and Engineering
Realizing the need for education and research in the field of energy, the Government of India established a national Centre for Energy Studies (CES) at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in the year 1976. Research and development activities on various relevant aspects of conventional as well as non conventional energy sources were initiated and suitable infrastructure established in its formative years. In response to the demand from industrial and other organizations for trained manpower in the interdisciplinary field of energy, a regular M.Tech. programme in Energy Studies has been offered at the CES since 1981. In order to accommodate the requests of many organizations for offering an M. Tech. course in the field of energy outside the normal working hours, an evening part time programme was started in 1989 which was subsequently revised to an M.Tech. programme in Energy and Environment Management in 1998. To further expanding the scope and depth of academic and research activities being undertaken by the 45-year-old Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi established a new ‘Department of Energy Science and Engineering’ in 2021.
Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE)
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) has been established on 1st January 2018 for developing and undertaking research on materials for specific end uses. It holds the privilege of being the only materials research and engineering department in Delhi-NCR region. Traditionally, MSE programs involve two major classifications – a) functional, and b) structural materials. While these classifications are self-explanatory in nature and carry the weight of historical precedent, with the rise of smart materials, novel fabrication methods, and advances in biomaterials and pharmaceuticals, it has become increasingly common to cross such divisions both inside MSE, but also in interaction with external disciplines.

Founded in 1961, the department marked the establishment of IIT Delhi with a mission of conducting world-class research and providing quality education. • International Ph.D. Fellowship Programme (IPFP): IIT Delhi has announced the International Ph.D. Fellowship Programme (IPFP), as an effort to attract talented young minds globally. • International Masters Scholarship Programme: A limited number of scholarships are available for International M.Tech./M.Des./M.S.(R) Students, who have not qualified GATE/CEED. The assistance is at par with Indian students. However, such students will be selected by a Central Committee on the recommendations made by respective academic units at the time of selection.
• Applicants under Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programme: The foreign nationals desiring admission to a postgraduate programme (M.Sc./ M.Des./ M.Tech./ MBA / M.S. (Research)/ M.P.P./ Ph.D.) at IIT Delhi under this Fellowship programme, are required to apply to the Indian High Commissions/ Embassies, in their respective countries. After examining the case of the applicants, they will recommend /sponsor the names to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi, which in turn, will recommend the applicants to this Institute for selection through due process.

The fee structure for B.Tech programs at IIT Delhi is as follows:

IIT Delhi Hostel Rules
Hostel Rules
- On arrival a student will report to the caretaker or any other official of the hostel authorised by the warden and will take possession of the room after signing the inventory of the furniture, electrical and other items in the room.
- At the end of each semester a student shall vacate his/her room and hand over the charge of the room including all items on the inventory to the Caretaker-or-any other official of the hostel, authorised by the warden.
- Any student desirous of retaining his room during the vacation must seek prior permission from the Associate Dean (Hostel Management).
- The Hostel dues shall be paid as per the directives of the BHM.
- Any act of intimidation or violence, wilful damage to property or drunken and riotous behaviour constitutes an offence.
- Possession or use of narcotics, consumption of alcoholic beverages and gambling are strictly prohibited.
- Use of audio equipment in hostels is acceptable only if it is not objectionable to other residents.
- It is mandatory to seek prior approval from hostel warden for any guest(s) staying in the hostel for a period up to five days. Warden may deny permission if the situation so warrants. For longer stay period, permission is to be sought from the Associate Dean (Hostel Management).
- Students are allowed to visit each other in the designated common areas of the hostels till 2.00 a.m. in the night
- Guests or other family members may be entertained by a student in the visitors’ room in the hostel from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
- In case any resident has to stay out for some work after 11.00 p.m., it is advised to do so after making proper entries in the entry/exit register with details like name, entrynumber, purpose, name of the laboratory/computer centre, time of leaving the hostel and expected time of return to the hostel. On return, they may update the same register with actual time of return.

- Wardens and/or Institute officials (including Security Unit) and/or those authorized (by ADHM or Dean Student Affairs or Director) may visit any room/area in a hostel for security/routine checking purposes at any time. Such visits do NOT need to be announced in advance.

- Any student desirous of retaining his room during the vacations (winter and summer breaks) must seek prior permission from the office of Associate Dean Hostel Management (ADHM).

- Any act of intimidation or violence, wilful damage to property or drunken and riotous behaviour constitutes an offence.
- Possession or use of narcotics, consumption of alcoholic beverages and gambling are strictly prohibited.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited inside hostel premises.
- Possession of, or any association with, any substances rendered illegal (as per laws applicable in Delhi) will result in direct reporting to the Police.
- Carrying out of any activity rendered illegal (as per laws applicable in Delhi) will result in direct reporting to the police.
- Use of audio equipment in hostels is acceptable only if it is not objectionable to other residents.
- All hostels are required to maintain “Silence Zone”* norms between 2200 – 0600 hrs as per guidelines of Delhi Govt. (https://www.dpcc.delhigovt.nic.in/noise_standards#gsc.tab=0). Hence any unnecessary movement/activity must be avoided to prevent any kind of noise/disturbance during this time*.
- Any absence from the hostel for more than 24 hrs, or those requiring mess rebates, must be informed in writing, in advance, to the respective caretaker.
Rules pertaining to visitors/guests (including parents/family)
- Any non-resident of a hostel, but currently registered as an IIT Delhi student, must be duly registered in the hostel entry register as a visitor/guest by a current resident of that hostel. Without this, any visitor will be treated as an unauthorized visitor.
- Non-residents of a hostel, but currently registered IIT Delhi students, including residents from different hostels in the campus, are allowed to visit each other ONLY in the designated common areas of the hostels till 0200 hrs in the night. The designated common areas are identified by House Working Committee of the hostel.
- Visits by any guests, for any duration, in hostels require prior written approval/permission as below. Further, at the time of the visit, visitors must be duly registered in the hostel entry register as a visitor/guest by a current resident of that hostel. Without this, any visitor will be treated as an unauthorized visitor.
- It is mandatory to seek prior approval from hostel warden for any guest(s) for a period up to five days. Warden may deny permission if the situation so warrants. For longer stay period, permission is to be sought from the Associate Dean Hostel Management.
- Guests may be allowed to stay, with prior written permission and for limited time (see above), only in guest accommodations available in the same hostel or other hostels – this depends on the availability of guest accommodation in hostels.
- For (a) security reasons and (b) safeguarding privacy of hostel residents, guests are NOT allowed to enter individual wings/rooms in hostels. Guests may meet with residents ONLY in DESIGNATED (common) areas in hostels.
- Visiting hours for guests to meet with residents in hostels are 0800 – 2000 hrs.
- Unauthorized visitors in hostels must be reported to the IIT Delhi Security Unit – they may be handed over to the Police, if required.

- Silence zone is defined as areas up to 100 meters around such premises as hospitals, educational institutions, and courts.
