Kabul Airport in Afghanistan attacked with 20-30 rockets

Terrorists have attacked the Kabul international airport in Afghanistan, according to the TOLO News. The rocket attack came just hours after US Defence Secretary James Mattis arrived in Afghanistan on a surprise visit.

All flights at the airport were cancelled following the attack.

The rocket attack started at about 11.15 am, with firing of about 20 and 30 rockets at the airport. There were no immediate information regarding casualties or about the perpetrator of the attack. Security personnel  are currently searching nearby properties to track down the perpetrators.

According to experts, the nearby NATO base could be the actual target of the attack rather than the Kabul international airport

AFP reported that multiple rockets landed at the airport after US Defence Secretary James Mattis landed at the airfield.

One witness tweeted: “Currently on lockdown at The Baron hotel in Kabul. Rocket attacks from the mountain. God save us all.”

This was surprise visit of Mattis who arrived at Afghanistan with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.

“Discussions will focus on the NATO-Afghanistan partnership, including the ongoing NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in support of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces,” a statement on the mission said.

On Tuesday, Mattis was in India where he met PM Narendra Modi, and some other ministers.
