The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, in collaboration with HDFC Parivartan, has launched a series of technology-driven initiatives aimed at improving energy and food security, enhancing farmer incomes, and promoting eco-friendly practices across Assam and Meghalaya.
The initiative, under the Focused Development Programme, targets three key areas: renewable energy, advanced agricultural practices, and capacity-building.
Central to the programme is the innovative Biomass Pellet Unit established in Umnowe village, Meghalaya. The unit converts agricultural residues and natural biomass into green fuel pellets, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuels like wood and coal.
The green pellets are being promoted as a cleaner, more sustainable fuel source for rural households and small industries.
In Assam’s Hailakandi district, another groundbreaking project has taken root in the form of an agrivoltaic farm, where medicinal herbs are grown beneath solar panels. This dual-use approach allows farmers to harness solar energy while simultaneously cultivating crops, maximizing land use and diversifying income sources.
Further strengthening the agricultural value chain, IIT Guwahati has also introduced a tea and herbal processing centre, powered collectively by over 1,000 farmers.
Alongside, a freeze-drying and herbal processing facility enables long-term preservation of perishable produce without compromising quality—allowing access to premium markets and export opportunities.
These projects are already showing tangible results. Hundreds of farmers across the region have participated in hands-on training workshops and practical demonstrations, acquiring the knowledge and tools needed to benefit from these innovations.
By combining cutting-edge technology with local agricultural practices, IIT Guwahati and HDFC Parivartan are not only enhancing livelihoods but also supporting India’s broader goals for clean energy and sustainable development. The initiatives are expected to serve as a model for rural transformation in other parts of the country.
