International Yoga Day 2016: Thousands of people Participate in Yoga Sessions in India

On Tuesday, Prime Minister participated in a mass yoga demonstration in Chandigarh on the occasion of International Yoga Day 2016. The event , which began at 6:30 am, was organized at the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, and over 30,000 people, took part in the event.  Hundred differently-abled children were also present at the Capitol Complex to perform different postures of Yoga during demonstration protocol. The theme for this year’s event was to ‘Connect the Youth’.

The International Yoga is also being celebrated across the nation, with reports coming of yoga sessions being organized in various states. Thousands of people turned out in these sessions to practice the ancient Indian discipline.

In Chandigarh, several other dignitaries, including Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, were also present.  PM Modi described the Yoga as the ancient Indian art that is most selfless of its kind, which doesn’t discriminate among people and functions for the betterment of mankind.

“Can we take the next year, until the next International Yoga Day, to focus on diabetes?” PM Modi asked the participants. He said every year focus could shift to a new disease which could be combated with yoga.

“Of the many occasions universally recognized by the UN and observed across the world, there is probably none that can compete with International Yoga Day in terms of how revolutionary it is and the extent to which it has been accepted worldwide,” he added.

President Pranab Mukherjee also inaugurated a yoga event at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and urged the countrymen to embrace in the discipline in their everyday life to stay fit and healthy. He praised PM Modi for his efforts in pulling off the annual event successfully.

“On the basis of Prime Minister’s proposal United Nations on 11 December, 2014 at the 69th session of the UN assembly decided that the June 21 would be observed as International Yoga Day,” President Mukherjee said at the event which was attended by more than 1,000 people.

“One thing is very interesting to note that how much interest was created as many as 177 countries who are the members of the United Nations general assembly cosponsored their allusion,” he said.

The mega mass yoga event was also held at the Connaught Place in New Delhi which was attended by hundreds of people from all walks of life. Similar events were also held at several other places in Delhi including Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, Talkatora Garden, and Japani Park in Rohini.

More than 135 countries will participate in International Yoga Day celebrations this year.  Last year, two new records were created on this day – largest yoga class with 35,985 people performing Yoga in New Delhi, and most nationalities (84) participating in a single yoga event.
