Two sanitation workers died in Dehradun due to suffocation while cleaning a clogged sewer line at Palm City residential colony in Patel Nagar area.
They have been identified as Ajay and Dabbu. They were residents of Brahampuri area in Dehradun, and were working for a private contractor.
According to TOI, while trying to clean the 25-feet-long sewer line, one person entered the sewer line through a manhole. When he did not come back, another worker entered the sewer line, but he also died of suffocation.
In the past few days, heavy rains have brought the city of Dehradun to a halt.
Clogged drains, waterlogged roads and garbage on the streets have raised questions about the preparedness of Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) to tackle the rainy season. The city’s drainage system is mostly clogged and has not been not cleaned for months, leading to waterlogging on the roads. The met department, on Monday, recorded around 37 millimeter of rainfall within two hours. Water level of Rispana and Bindal rivers rose rapidly, forcing residents living close to the rivers to move to safer spots.
