Suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Sandeep Sharma had visited Haridwar in January this year, according to Praveen Sharma—the brother of Sandeep Sharma.
Praveen told Muzaffarnagar Police two Kashmiri friends of Sandeep accompanied him during his visit to Hardidwar.
Praveen Sharma was picked up by the UP police for questioning and he made these revelations on Thursday, according to TOI.
Praveen was questioned at New Mandi police station of Muzaffarnagar.
Police officials also looked into the financial condition of the Sandeep’s family and screened their bank accounts. After the police questioning Praveen was allowed to leave for home.
Sharma, 26, was nabbed by JK Police on July 10 for being part of LeT module. According to police, he participated in several terror attacks in Kashmir, including the recent killing of six policemen and robbing of banks and ATMs to fund terrorists.
The intelligence agencies have already warned of a “lone wolf” attack on the devotees participating in the yatra this year.
On first Monday of the month of Shrawan, millions of kanwarias reached the holy city of Haridwar to collect Gangajal from the river Ganga. Kanwar Yatra is acknowledged as the biggest pilgrimage in North India. Last year, around 3.4 crore devotes reached the holy city and this year, the figure is expected to go further up.
District administration and police have made ample arrangements to ensure a smooth conduct of the fair. Heavy police force being deployed in the city, Haridwar administration has taken it as a challenge with the number of the pilgrims seeing a surge every passing year.
