BMW has sold its 100,000 electrified vehicle, three years after the i3 first hit the markets in November 2013.
According to BMW, i3 is the most successful EV in the premium compact segment. In comparison, the full-size Tesla Model S hit the milestone of 150,000 units a few months back, while the Nissan Leaf has surpassed the 230,000 mark.
BMW’s i8 is currently the most popular electrified sports car, with more than 10,000 units sold since its mid-2014 launch. In addition, approximately 30,000 plug-in hybrids have been sold to date; known under the label BMW iPerformance, and reflecting the successful broad-based transfer of BMW i technology.
“When it comes to electric drivetrains, we’ve already successfully managed to put this technology transfer on the road,” said BMW chief Harald Krueger.
“The next technological advance we will address is automated driving, where the BMW iNext will set a new benchmark.”
BMW has also confirmed plans to produce a plug-in hybrid MINI Countryman in 2017, followed by an open-top i8 Roadster in 2018, a fully electric MINI in 2019, an X3 EV in 2020, and a battery-powered crossover in 2021.
